What Are The Benefits of Bicycling For Exercise?

Anytime the weather gets a little bit nicer, many people like to leave the sweaty confines of the gym and get out in the sunshine to do their workouts. While weight lifting outdoors is not the most convenient idea, there are plenty of things you can do outdoors that will improve your fitness and keep you from getting bored with looking at the same four walls. Bicycling is one of these activities, and millions of people around the country use their bicycling for exercise. And why not? It gets you out of the house and out of the gym, and there is a lot more freedom when it comes to your chosen scenery. Bicycling for exercise is always going to be popular, and here are a few reasons why you might want to think about taking it up.

Of course, some mistakenly believe that bicycling is just for a tiny amount of active recreation and isn”t useful in trying to improve fitness or weight loss. They would be wrong on both counts. Riding a bicycle for a sustained period of time can have the same amount of cardiovascular benefits as walking or even swimming. Of course, sustained time is the key. You”ll have to plan to use your bicycle for at least thirty minutes at a stretch in order to reap the fullest benefits of bicycling as an exercise. If you can do this three or four times a week, it can be a great addition to your fitness repertoire.

It would best to use bicycling as an exercise if you live in or can find an area that is conducive to cyclists. This could be different for different people. If you would rather ride your ten speed at a leisurely pace along flat and paved surfaces you”ll need to find areas that encourage this. Some cities have special bike paths that are paved and are perfect for your cycling needs. Others have combination bike/foot paths, often near lakes or other natural parks. These can provide you with a change of scenery as you bike each day. On the other hand, if you”re more of the exploring type, you may want to forge your own path along roads. Many streets offer a small bike lane. Make sure you stay in this lane when bicycling, and wear bright clothing and utilize reflectors. Helmets are also important, so don”t neglect bike safety in your quest for fitness.

Of course, if you don”t enjoy outdoor activity, there”s always a stationary bicycle. These bicycles have come a long way since the old days, and can provide you with every bit of the same cardiovascular benefits as the real thing. Plus, there”s the added benefit of not having to watch out for drivers and hidden rocks along the path.
